From the 19^th to the 23^rd of April Perth came alive with an array of West Australian Designers showcasing their Spring/Summer 2012/2013 collections at the state of the art Perth Convention and Exhibition Center located in the heart of the city.

Simone Lee created  27 unique and stunning styles to complement the collections from designers such as Melinda Looi, Ruth Tarvydus, Rosie & Broken, Jonte, Jessica Bratich, With Grace, Cebiche, Peridot London, Gysea, Zaccaria, Kat Grace, Evan Wanganeen, One Fell Swoop, and House of Zhivago among others.

There was an array of hair coiffure, some had a hint of modern 60s reinvention, others were sleek and minimal with a feature such as the tight coil Zulu braid for ZHIVAGO or strong central part lines providing design strength for PERIDOT LONDON. There were also some breath taking avante guard structures and original rare coiffure sure to send a buzz throughout the hair world!

Everything ran very smoothly and I think advance preparation and having a great team was the key and crucial to the success of the show, said Simone. I was lucky to get some of Perth’s finest hairstylist involved such as Lee Wallis, the amazing team at Salon Supplies Australia, and also James Nicholson who came over from Melbourne to help and was nothing short of brilliant.

Using lots of ANTI.GRAVITY as a foundation to give volume and weightless lift to his highly coifed styles, David back-brushed and back-combed the models hair into great shapes and height, reminiscent of the 60′s but with a modern twist that kept it all looking young, modern and relevant.

At an intimate VIP crowd at Montreal’s fashionable Le Loft Hotel cocktail bar David, with the assistance of Tim McClean and Joseph Gossen, demonstrated on an easy-to-achieve-in-the-salon ‘flip bow dry and set’ that he quickly sewed into soft Bardot-like up-do’s, disheveled bobs that were back-brushed and volumous, and a massive bee-hive powdered with violet Color Bug that would have made Pricilla Presley jealous. (If only she had had Texture.Master to hold it in place too!)

“I feel really inspired by styles that reflect glamourous lifestyles in shows like Mad Men, or movies by italian director Fellini, where the hair is an integral part of depicting the feminine power and sexuality. Hair is such a huge part in creating the story of a woman every day, that I find it fascinating and intriguing to explore it’s endless possibilities. To finish off the theme, the models then walked a choreographed runway show to a remake 60′s french pop song ‘Zou Bizou’ as preformed in the Mad Men season premier. All in all, it was a glamourous and sophisticated event put on by the KEVIN.MURPHY distributor Star Bedard in Quebec, that would have made Donald Draper himself proud and one that will surely be remembered for some time.

Returning to the majestic Sydney Town Hall on the 2^nd of April, this glittering event showcased, recognised and celebrated the amazing work of the Australian hair and beauty industry.

Over 200 hairdressers, makeup artists, fashion stylists, photographers, beauty editors and A-list industry faces converged at the Town Hall to support the amazing hairdressers who took out the awards for each category.

Known for its international judging panel, the glamorous and prestigious AHFA’s celebrated its 18 years of excellence in industry standards. The most well-known independent awards globally, the event attracted the who’s who of the hair, beauty, fashion and entertainment industries.

This year, KEVIN.MURPHY YOUNG.AGAIN takes home the prestigious award for best new product!  While Kevin was in London, on a stopover on his way to Paris to launch his line of products. I asked Kevin how he felt about his win.

“I’m totally delighted and very surprised. The competition was very tough so I’m very honoured to receive this award.”

His Roots… (history not his hair!)

I first meet Dat while he was assisting behind the scenes at a KEVIN.MURPHY event.  I instantly loved his easy-going, unassuming personality and I was blown away when I saw photographs of his work and just had to write about him and share with you the work of this very talented young man.

His full name is Dat Tran and he was born in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam, but immigrated to Canada with his parents when he was just six years old.

 “I don’t remember much (about Vietnam) because I was quite young when I was there. But the thing I can remember was the food, everything was fresh.”

When he was little he used to help his mother in the salon where she worked as a hairdresser but admits his inspiration to become a hairdresser didn’t happen until he watched “Beautiful Life,” a Japanese TV drama about a hairdresser. It was then that he decided he wanted to learn more and ventured off to learn from hairstylists at other salons.

He now lives in the culturally and ethnically diverse city of Toronto, Ontario where he owns a salon that bears his name. He’s been a hairstylist for over 9 years and  has been doing photo shoots for magazines for the last year and a half.

Dat Work…

“I used to think that my work wasn’t good enough, but I wanted to give it a try. So I contacted a magazine editor who loved my work and that’s how I got started!”

Over the course of his career his work has been featured in magazines all over Canada including Canadian Hairdresser, Salon, VietSun, Modern Salon, New Glass, YYZ Living, Auxiliary, Sessions, T & M, Zeum, Hacid.

“To me styling hair is like art, one set of hair with endless possibilities. That’s why I’ve always admired Robert Lobetta, he took simple element and applied them to hair. He viewed hair as art which is what I admire about him.”

How Did He Do Dat…

Apply a cocktail of  ANTI.GRAVITY and HAIR.RESORT lotion to damp hair and blow dry.  Section the hair and take a 2 cm x 2 cm of hair and apply the U-pin (Geisha pin) in a figure 8 and secure it with a pin curl clips, then I sprayed HAIR.RESORT spray.  I repeat the step throughout the whole head.  I then use apply the flat-iron at 220 degrees celsius on each section of the U-pin.  After finishing apply heat to all the U-pin, then I would lightly mist the HAIR.RESORT spray all over to help create the extra hold.  Letting the hair cool down for 10 mins, I then take the U-pin out and separating the curls with my hand to create the afro effect.  Then I would little comb the hair with the TEXTURE.COMB to add more volume and then mold the hair to the shape and secure the look with SESSION.SPRAY.

How long have you been working with KEVIN.MURPHY products? Two years.

Which are your favourite KM products?  ANTI.GRAVITY lotion, HAIR.RESORT lotion and spray, SESSION.SPRAY, TEXTURE.COMB and SMOOTHING.BRUSH.

What advice would you give other stylists that want to start working with magazines.  Keep an open mind.  Be ready create multiple hair styles on a photo shoot.  Keep practicing.  And if you want to get into doing session work you have to contact the editors of the publication and show them your work.

A couple of quick tips using KM products?  Spraying a couple blast of Fresh.Hair on hair that has been Color.Bug to create a softness to the look.  After setting most hair styles, I usually add a couple mist of  HAIR.RESORT spray.  Which help aid the hold and make me use less of Session.Spray.  Also it help keeps the texture of the hair so that I am able to change or create another hair style.
