SESSION.MASTER Felicity Davis talks KEVIN.MURPHY

The Make-up artist used COLOR.BUG for eye shadow at the recent KEVIN.MURPHY Zagreb, Croatia Show.

When did the whole thing start: How did you meet Kevin Murphy?
I first met Kevin when he came to my salon. I had been a fan of his work and was always inspired by him. I had a client that I thought should be a model and she did model for him, her first shoot was in Bali with Kevin. He commented on her color and next thing you know I was in my salon and loving the product, selling lots of KEVIN.MURPHY. He came to visit and that is the beginning of the story! We chatted a few years back and discovered we went to the same school together when we were young . I think that sums up our destiny.

How did you learned to love KEVIN.MURPHY?
It made all of my work easier and I got the results I had dreamed of.

How would you describe the KEVIN.MURPHY philosophy?
Strength, Moisture and Regeneration. Purpose built and performance based. Authentic, skin care for hair.

What is the big difference to other brands?
Most brands are lead by a man in a suit who runs numbers. Hairstylists don’t respond to that. Typically stylists aren’t driven by hard and fast numbers (business) but by passion and feeling. The world has evolved into one big bottom line, and when you are in such an artistic field you can become quite disenchanted by that. Kevin Murphy has been able to reinvigorate stylists by bringing back the 60′s philosophy to hair – make it look good, let it move, and do it using products lead by someone you can actually touch – an real live working stylist.
The KEVIN.MURPHY product starts and ends with him. Sure, there are people in between, but he actually has a hand in the process. He smells the products, he touches them….other brands are lead by a man that tells the puppet lead stylist what to sell. Kevin Murphy is one of us – and stylists not only respect it, but more importantly they crave it.

Do you have distributors all over the world?

Yes – we have distributors all over the world our global family is growing by the minute!

Who is the typical KEVIN.MURPHY hairdresser?
The typical KEVIN.MURPHY hairdresser is savvy. You mean business when you sell a product in this economy with the price-point we sell at. But there is a reason for that. We don’t just pick a number out of a hat – many things go into our products besides love. We take into account the environment, and a vast majority of our stylists really love that. Our products perform, and stylists that takes their craft seriously needs a product that won’t let them down. Our education programs are quite amazing as well – it may look like we are a product company, but our education goes hand-in-hand. We try our hardest to set stylists up for success and that goes far beyond the product.

And what is the typical KEVIN.MURPHY customer like?
Because we at KEVIN.MURPHY believe in a grass roots approach to things our KEVIN.MURPHY customers are typically the patrons of our KEVIN.MURPHY stylists. These clients are savvy people as well, having already sought out our passionate driven stylists. They are people that are on the cusp of cool, as well as being aware of how our carbon footprint affects the world. (All of our product containers are recyclable.) And of course, KEVIN.MURPHY customers by default have amazing tresses!

Why is Europe such a good market for KEVIN.MURPHY?
I think hairdressers all over the world are inspired by fashion and I think it resonates with the stylist and the client.
Are there any differences in the expectations between hairdressers in different countries?
Funny, hairdressers all laugh at the same place in the same joke. I think we all have the expectation that there will be something new and different and KEVIN.MURPHY delivers.

Do you still have an own salon somewhere?
I do still have my house and salon in Australia. I have a lovely young hairdresser who rents both and she carries KEVIN.MURPHY.
Do you do shows for KEVIN.MURPHY?
Yes I do! And I am about to be doing a lot: London, Montreal and Croatia.

Why do you think that Facebook, Blogging and other social media and networking is so important for hairdressers?
You could work in a salon full of 19 people and feel alone. Not all stylists are created equal. There typically tends to be a shortage of people that make hairdressing a career as opposed to ‘doing hair for a living.’ Social media has been an amazing way to glue together a community of like-minded individuals. Sure, we can get our message out and it is good for marketing – but the real reason it matters? Our tribe is able to meet on a daily basis no matter where we are. Our family may be spread far and wide, but anytime you are at a computer you can be right there with em.

Tell us something about the KM-Blog and KM-TV!
One of the first people I met when I embarked on my KEVIN.MURPHY world domination tour was a stylist that resided in Portland, Oregon. She is a shining example of the kind of folks that this brand attracts, and she is now or KEVIN.MURPHY blogger. She felt it necessary to be able to more readily get information out to starving artists, and thought it to be important to feed their sole more regularly then what we had been doing. KMTV is going to be a super rad behind the scenes pod cast platform – you will be able to go behind the scenes of KEVIN.MURPHY photo shoots, shows, as well as interviews – with yours truly included!

Where do you see the future of hairdressing?
The future is brighter with KEVIN.MURPHY leading education and growing teams all over the world!

And finally: Whats your all time favorite KM-product?
I can’t really have a favorite:) But right now it is HAIR.RESORT SPRAY and COLOR.BUG, this will be huge huge huge!

If you like this post, you’ll LOVE these!
